Meliskerke


Meliskerke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Veere, and lies about 8 km west of Middelburg.
Meliskerke was a separate municipality until 1966, when it was merged into the new municipality of Mariekerke.〔Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. ()〕
In 2001, the village of Meliskerke had 1201 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.30 km², and contained 372 residences.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), ''Bevolkingskernen in Nederland 2001'' (). (Statistics are for the continuous built-up area).〕
The statistical area "Meliskerke", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 1450.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), ''Statline: Kerncijfers wijken en buurten 2003-2005'' (). As of 1 January 2005.〕
Meliskerke is a conservative Protestant village, located on the Dutch Bible Belt. In the 2010 municipal elections, 63 percent of the local population voted for the Reformed Political Party (SGP). The three Christian parties in the elections (the Reformed Political Party, the ChristianUnion and the Christian Democratic Appeal) had a combined total of almost 70 percent of the votes.
