Meze

Meze or mezze (, also spelled ''mazzeh'' or ''mazze''; (アラビア語:مزة); (ペルシア語:مزه); (トルコ語:meze); ; (セルビア語:мезе); (ブルガリア語:мезе)) is a selection of small dishes served to accompany alcoholic drinks as a course or as appetizers before the main dish in Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Near East and the Balkans. In Levantine, Caucasian and Balkan cuisines meze is served at the beginning of all large-scale meals.〔Alan Davidson, ''The Oxford Companion to Food'', Oxford University Press, 1999, pp. 500-501〕
==Etymology==
The word is found in Iran and all the cuisines of the former Ottoman Empire and comes from the Turkish ''meze'' "taste, flavour, snack, relish", borrowed from Persian (' "taste, snack" < ' "to taste").〔''Oxford English Dictionary, online version, June 2011〕
