Mukhia

The Mukhia (commonly 'Mukhia' मुखिया) also known as Sunuwar people, belongs to one of the ancient linguistic tribes of Kirant. They are one of the Indigenous Peoples of Nepal. They consider themselves as suryawanshi. They are normally categorized as "Gurkha population" and hence belong to Mongoloid.
According to history, there were three states of Kiratas in Eastern Nepal- Far(Palloo) Kirat, Mid(Majh) Kirat and Near(Wallo) Kirat. Mid Kirat and Far Kirat are known as Rai and Limbu respectively. And the Near Kirat is known as Sunuwar who spread over the river-bank of Sunkoshi, Likhu and Khimti and slowly they spread all over the world. It is believed that some Sunuwar people moved eastwards from their original locations in search of better opportunities. Mukhia peoples are now living in different places including Ilam, Jhapa, Panchthar, Taplejung, Tehrathum, Dolakha, etc. of Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeling, Kalingpong, etc. of India and southern part of Bhutan.

There are a many sub-cast under Mukhia(sunuwar. There are two main catogeries of Mukiha known as Dus Tharay (group having ten sub-castes) and Bahara Tharay (having twelve castes).
