There is one living genus, ''Mystacina'', with two extant species, one of which is believed to have become extinct in the 1960s. They are medium-sized bats, about in length, with grey, velvety fur. ==Species== * New Zealand greater short-tailed bat, ''Mystacina robusta'' (believed extinct) * New Zealand lesser short-tailed bat, ''Mystacina tuberculata'' The family also contains the extinct genus ''Icarops'' known from Miocene fossils found in Australia.
