They are Critically Endangered due to habitat loss, and iron and bauxite mining within their small ranges. Traditionally two species are recognized, but in 2010 it was proposed that ''N. liberiensis'' should be considered a subspecies of ''N. occidentalis''.〔Sandberger, Hillers, Doumbia, Loua, Brede and Rödel (2010).
