Octadecaborane is an inorganic compound, a borane with chemical formula B18H22. It is formed by oxidation of the B20H182− anion or by oxidative dimerization of B9H12− anion. This chemical can be used as a precursor of the B18H22+ cation, which is useful as a P-type dopant through ion implantation for the manufacture of semiconductors. The molecule is ionized and accelerated, more or less intact (B18H''x''+), to the necessary energy to cause it to embed in the substrate to the desired depth. Once the octadecaborane molecule has been implanted, it breaks apart and most of the hydrogen atoms diffuse and escape the substrate leaving behind the boron atoms.
== Structure ==
The covalent structure of octadecaborane contains two B9H11 polyhedra, each having a decaborane-like form, joined at one of their B–B edges. These two boron atoms are each coordinated to six others; this compound was the first one found to have such a high number of borons coordinated around a single boron center. There are two different geometric isomers of this compound, differing in the orientation of the two edge-fused polyhedra to each other.〔〔 This compound was the first borane found to have multiple isomeric forms. Among the geometric isomers, one with chirality was the first borane to be resolved into its separate enantiomers, and was only the second chiral borane known at that time.
