Oostkapelle
Oostkapelle is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Veere, and lies about 9 km north of Middelburg. Oostkapelle was a separate municipality until 1966, when it was merged with Domburg.〔Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. ()〕 In 2001, the village of Oostkapelle had 1819 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 1.1 km², and contained 953 residences. The statistical area "Oostkapelle", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 2420.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), ''Statline: Kerncijfers wijken en buurten 2003-2005'' (). As of 1 January 2005.〕
Oostkapelle derives its name to a chapel which apparently in the nineteenth century was there, along with another chapel, which was present at the nearby village of Westkapelle. As a stronghold, the western sister village of Oostkapelle developed significantly better than Oostkapelle in the Middle Ages. Oostkapelle remained a farmering village until the twentieth century. After the Second World War the village developed in the vein of Domburg and Zoutelande to a spa, with dunes and the North Sea at a short distance. As a result, the village was not subject to depopulation.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), ''Bevolkingskernen in Nederland 2001'' (). (Statistics are for the continuous built-up area).〕
