PRKACA

The catalytic subunit α of protein kinase A is an enzyme that in humans encoded by the ''PRKACA'' gene. This catalytic subunit is a part of a bigger complex that is responsible for phosphorylating other proteins and substrates, changing its activity. A member of the AGC kinase family, protein kinase A (PKA) regulates many cellular processes including glucose metabolism, cell division, and contextual memory. Several mutations have been found in PRKACA that are associated with adrenal tumors, and PKA has also been implicated in cardiovascular disease and cancer.
== Discovery ==

PKA was discovered by Edmond H. Fischer and Edwin G. Krebs while they were working on glycogen phosphorylase. They discovered that phosphorylase kinase was activated by another kinase that was dependent on cyclic AMP (cAMP). They named this new kinase cAMP-dependent protein kinase, and proceeded to purify and characterize this new enzyme. Fischer and Krebs won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1992 for this discovery and their continued work on cAMP dependent protein kinase activity. Today, this kinase is known as Protein kinase A (PKA).
