Pankaj is a male given name, common in Nepal and India to the Hindus. It has its roots in the Sanskrit word ''pankaj'' which means the lotus flower. The word is a "samas", i.e. a grammatical union of two component words, "paŋka" (mud, pond) and "jana/jāta" (born, generated). The second component is commonly shortened in Sanskrit to give the suffix "-ja". This Sanskrit suffix "-ja" is cognate with Pashto "-zai" and Persian "-zad". The actual meaning is lotus which is born in mud and blossoms after arising from mud. The lotus flower is also the national flower of India and is considered to be a symbol of Buddhist teaching (cf. Nalanda). *Pankaj Advani, an Indian and World Champion snooker and billiards player *Pankaj Bhatia, an Indian entrepreneur and owner of K.P.
