This is a marine flightless midge. There are only four species completely described in this genus (''P. natans'' Edward 1924; ''P. cottoni'' Wormersley 1937; ''P. pacifica'' Tokunaga 1964; and ''P. oceana'' Tokunaga 1964) and another possible specie was recorded by Epler〔EPLER, J.H. 1995. Identification manual for the larvae Chironomidae (Diptera) of Florida. Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Water Facilities, Tallahassee.〕 but only in the immature form.
