Pyneeandee

Pyneeandee is a Spanish, Dutch and French surname originating from the Spanish provinces Cáceres and Salamanca, the French province Languedoc and the Dutch province of North Brabant. Due to only few remaining families with the name, the meaning of the name is largely unknown, traditional historians believe it was influenced by other Spanish dialects e.g. Catalan or Asturian.
People with the surname, 'Pyneeandee', can nowadays be found in the Republic of Mauritius and parts of the Republic of South Africa. However, it seems Mauritius is the only remaining country with a large number (relative to its population) of inhabitants with the surname 'Pyneeandee'. A suitable explanation for this is during the Portuguese colonial days where Portugal briefly occupied the island in 1507. However, many argue that this explanation cannot be accurate as the Portuguese were only briefly on the island and after they left, it was unoccupied for several years before the Dutch arrived in 1598.
Another explanation is that the name was associated with Dutch sailors who named different places around the island after their own names. Pyneeandee would have been the name of one the Dutch sailors, however, many disagree with this explanation as historical accounts suggest that the Dutch left after it had exploited the island's available natural resources. The most likely explanation is that the French who settled on the island in 1715 brought with them sailors of Portuguese and/or Spanish backgrounds. These sailors bore ancient Spanish and Portuguese names and continued to stay on the island even after the British take-over in 1810. With the abolition of slavery, these original French sailors with Spanish and Portuguese links then married and fathered children with original slaves (who were now free). These children were named their father's names and 'Pyneeandee' was one of them.
The South African link can be attributed to the Dutch link to South Africa - where the Afrikaans language originates from, and it is thought the surname 'Pyneeandee' may have also originated from the South African's Dutch link. It is also thought the original Mauritian Pyneeandees moved to South Africa and had families there, thus, naming their children with their surnames.
