Qayyarah or Qayara ((アラビア語:القيارة)) (its name derived from tar word in Arabic language for resources of tar in the area) an Iraqi subdistrict located southern Nineveh Governorate at the west bank of Tigris river, Its seat is the town of Qayyara. Total population in Qayyara subdistrict is Sunni Muslims Arabs, belong to various tribes but the jabour is prime tribe there. Agriculture is main source of income, farmers are planting different crops especially wheat and water melon. June 2014, subdistrict of Qayyara fell into hands of IS . Qayyarah is a rich with its natural resources including Oil and Sulphur. ==Qayyarah oil field == Qayyara Oil field located in Qayyara subdistrict .It is holds 800 million barrels of estimated reserves.the field was explored by British Oil development company in 1927 , production commenced during 1930s. Extracted oil is very heavy sour crude (API gravity 15°) therefore the production was in small quantities . 2010, Angolan Sonangol agreed with Iraqi government to develop Qayyara oil field as a joint venture with state-owned North Oil Company. Shares of the consortium divided between 75% shares for Sonangol, 25% shares for Iraqi partner. according to the deal Sonangol would invest $2 billion in return of $5 per barrel.
