The Qiongshan dialect of Lingao is spoken in Qiongshan. Hai Rui, a Ming Dynasty official, after who Hai Rui Park is named, was from Qiongshan. Chen Yuyi, Chairman of CPPCC Hainan Provincial Committee, was born in Qiongshan in 1936. Qiongzhou University is located in this district. Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve is located in the district and has an area of . It includes six rivers, and the coastline is very irregular and includes a number of bays and tidewater gullies.
