Methaqualone
Methaqualone, sold under the brand name Quaalude (\ˈkwā-ˌlüd\), in the US and Mandrax in the UK, is a sedative and hypnotic medication. It is a member of the quinazolinone class.
The sedative–hypnotic activity of methaqualone was first noted by researchers in the 1950s. In 1962, methaqualone was patented in the US by Wallace and Tiernan.〔US Patent 3135659 – Hydroxy and Alkoxy Aryl Quinazolones〕 Its use peaked in the early 1970s as a hypnotic, for the treatment of insomnia, and as a sedative and muscle relaxant. It is still produced and used clandestinely as a recreational drug throughout the world. The drug was popular in the 1970s in the disco club scene. At this point in time, the only other pharmaceutical depressant produced in large quantities by clandestine drug labs is glutethimide (former trade name Doriden and others) which is like methaqualone in many of its effects and which is combined with codeine (or more rarely dihydrocodeine or hydrocodone) in a drug combination called Loads, Six Packs, and Dors & Fours. Taking two 500 mg Doriden tablets along with tablets containing 240 mg of codeine (e.g. four tablets of Tylenol With Codeine No. 4) became popular in the 1970s and many users reported that taking the combination on an empty stomach, especially when washed down with a carbonated beverage, felt much like shooting morphine or heroin as the depressant both magnified the effects of the codeine and caused the liver to make much more of it into morphine (or dihydrocodeine to dihydromorphine, hydrocodone to hydromorphone). This points to methaqualone and glutethimide being drugs with unique effects with a dedicated following, as it would be easier to synthesise barbiturates, and chloral hydrate and paraldehyde much more so.〔glutethimide〕 〔Inside Narcotics, pp 423-5〕 Some users reportedly seek out mecloqualone, a congener often present in street methaqualone which also has been used as a pharmaceutical (see below). ==Uses==
