Gaelic ''rath'' ), along with Ratcliffe-upon-Soar and the Roman ruins at Leicester, known as Ratae Corieltauvorum.〔Thompson, James. (''The History of Leicester, from the Time of the Romans to the End of the Seventeenth Century'', Appendix A: Ratæ—Roman Leicester, pp. 443 ff ). J. S. Crossley (Leicester), 1849.〕 The suffix ''-by'' () is Old Norse for a farmstead or settlement.
