Ruaidrí

Ruaidrí (also Ruairi, Ruairidh, Ruaidhri, Ruairdhri, Rhuairidh, Ruaridh, Rhuaridh, Ruarídh, Ruari, Ruairí, Roighrí or Raighrí) is a Goidelic (Irish and Scottish Gaelic) masculine given name. It translates as "red-haired king" rua() ''red-coloured hair of people, foxes, etc.'', rí() ''king''. Its Gaelic pronunciation is /'ruərʲi:/, and in Munster Irish /rəi'rʲi:/. In English, it is typically pronounced as Rory /rɔːri/ or Roo-ry /ru:ri/. In Classical Irish/Gaelic, the name was written Ruaidhrigh, and in Old Gaelic Ruaidrí /ruaðʲr͈ʲiː/ (Proto Celtic
*roudo-riks).
Historically, it has also been anglicized by replacement with the Germanic cognate Roderick, of similar meaning (red-haired leader) (e.g. Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair anglicised ''Roderic O'Connor''). Its equivalent in the Welsh language is Rhodri, also meaning red-haired king.
