== History ==

Until 1918, ''RÖMERSTADT'' was part of the Austrian monarchy (Austria side after the compromise of 1867), head of the district of the same name, one of the 34 ''Bezirkshauptmannschaften'' in Moravia.〔Die postalischen Abstempelungen auf den österreichischen Postwertzeichen-Ausgaben 1867, 1883 und 1890, Wilhelm KLEIN, 1967〕
The post-office was opened in June 1850, succeeding to that of ''JANOWITZ''.〔Handbook of Austria and Lombardy-Venetia Cancellations on the Postage Stamp Issues 1850-1864, by Edwin MUELLER, 1961.〕
In December 1930, the town had 6,108 inhabitants.
In 1938, it was occupied by the Nazi army as one of the municipalities in Sudetenland.
On May 17, 1939, there were 5,859 inhabitants, and on May 22, 1947 there were 4,230 inhabitants. About 98% of the town's population were German-speaking. However, in execution of the Beneš decrees, the entire German population, with the exception of a few skilled workers, was forcibly deported to Germany and Austria in 1945. Today the town, renamed ''RÝMAŘOV'', is overwhelmingly Czech-speaking.
