It is one of the two places in Tamil Nadu where the Bhagavathar Melas are held, the other being Melattur. Two km from Saliamangalam is a village called Thirubuvanam.In ancient days it was called as Vikrama Chola Vinnagaram.1000 years back there existed a Ranganathar Swamy temple in the lines of Srirangam.It was a big town with 80 streets.
