A female novitiate is a śrāmaṇerī or śrāmaṇerikā ((パーリ語:sāmaṇerī)). ==Etymology== The literal meaning of ''śrāmaṇera'' is "small renunciate", and in Buddhism refers to someone who has taken the initial pravrajya vows but not the upasampada or full ordination.
