As of 2001, the total population was 1054. Traditionally, the village is known as Mathurapur. The name Shivnarayanpur came into being due to a goof up in naming of the railway station. It is also one of the biggest and oldest mandis for agriculture produce (mainly vegetables, pulses and jagrery) in Bihar. It is one of the biggest producer of Mango and Chili. In recent times the area has come up with vast acreage of mango cultivation and langra mangoes from here have a name and are much sought after in as far off markets as Kolkata and Bangladesh.
