Smilde () is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 10 km southwest of Assen. Smilde was a separate municipality until 1998, when it became a part of Middenveld.〔Ad van der Meer and Onno Boonstra, "Repertorium van Nederlandse gemeenten", KNAW, 2006. ()〕 In 2001, the town of Smilde had 3460 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 1.2 km², and contained 1449 residences.〔Statistics Netherlands (CBS), (''Bevolkingskernen in Nederland 2001'' ).
