Somalis ((ソマリ語:''Soomaali''), (アラビア語:صومال)) are an ethnic group inhabiting the Horn of Africa (Somali Peninsula). The overwhelming majority of Somalis speak the Somali language, which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family. They are predominantly Sunni Muslim.〔 Ethnic Somalis number around 16-20 million and are principally concentrated in Somalia (around 12.3 million),〔(CIA World Factbook: Somalia, people ) and (Map of the Somalia Ethnic groups ) (CIA according de (Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection )). The first gives 15% non-Somalis and the second 6%. Used 85% of current population of Somalia.〕 Ethiopia (4.6 million),〔 Kenya (2.4 million),〔 and Djibouti (464,600),〔 with many also residing in parts of the Middle East, North America and Europe.
==Etymology==
Irir Samaale, the oldest common ancestor of several Somali clans, is generally regarded as the source of the ethnonym ''Somali''. The name "Somali" is, in turn, held to be derived from the words ''soo'' and ''maal'', which together mean "go and milk" — a reference to the ubiquitous pastoralism of the Somali people.〔I. M. Lewis, ''A pastoral democracy: a study of pastoralism and politics among the Northern Somali of the Horn of Africa'', (Oxford University Press : 1963), p.12.〕 Another plausible etymology proposes that the term ''Somali'' is derived from the Arabic for "wealthy" (''dhawamaal''), again referring to Somali riches in livestock.
An Ancient Chinese document from the 9th century referred to the northern Somali coast — which was then called "Berbera" by Arab geographers in reference to the region's "Berber" (Cushitic) inhabitants〔David D. Laitin, Said S. Samatar, ''Somalia: Nation in Search of a State'', (Westview Press: 1987), p. 5.〕 — as ''Po-pa-li''.〔Lee V. Cassanelli, ''The shaping of Somali society: reconstructing the history of a pastoral people, 1600-1900'', (University of Pennsylvania Press: 1982), p.9.〕〔Nagendra Kr Singh, ''International encyclopaedia of Islamic dynasties'', (Anmol Publications PVT. LTD., 2002), p.524.〕 The first clear written reference of the sobriquet ''Somali'', however, dates back to the 15th century. During the wars between the Sultanate of Ifat based at Zeila and the Solomonic Dynasty, the Abyssinian Emperor had one of his court officials compose a hymn celebrating a military victory over the Sultan of Ifat's eponymous troops.〔I.M. Lewis, ''A modern history of the Somali: nation and state in the Horn of Africa'', 4, illustrated edition, (James Currey: 2002), p.25.〕
