Srpenica
Srpenica (; (イタリア語:Serpenizza)) is a village on the right bank of the Soča River in the Municipality of Bovec in the Littoral region of Slovenia. It includes the hamlet of Brezovo, which was abandoned after the Second World War.〔Savnik, Roman, ed. 1968. ''Krajevni leksikon Slovenije'', vol. 1. Ljubljana: Državna založba Slovenije, p. 422.〕 ==Name== Srpenica was attested in written records in 1496 as ''Sterpeniza''. The name is probably derived from a Romance reflex of the Latin word ''stirps'' 'tree, bush, root', which is preserved in Italian ''sterpo'' 'bushes, roots that have died off' and in Ladin ''šterp'' 'brambles, brush litter'. A less likely theory derives the name from the Ladin common noun ''stirpe'' 'sterile cow'.〔Snoj, Marko. 2009. ''Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen''. Ljubljana: Modrijan and Založba ZRC, p. 392.〕
