Stemonidium hypomelas
''Stemonidium hypomelas'' is a species of deep-sea eel in the family Serrivomeridae, originally described from a 171-mm specimen taken from a depth of around 1,000 m near Niihau Island, Hawaii in 1902. It can be distinguished from the related sawtooth eels by its reduced dentition, which more resemble those of the snipe eel.〔 It is of no significance to fisheries.〔 ==Distribution and habitat== ''Stemonidium hypomelas'' is widely distributed in the Pacific Ocean and the southern Atlantic Ocean, at depths of 500-1,229 m.〔 Scientific trawls conducted off Hawaii show that this species occurs below 550 m during the day, with most between 700–800 m. At night, a small subset of the population migrates upward to a minimum depth of 175 m.
