The Italian term ''stradioti'' could therefore be a loan from the Greek word ''stratiotai'' (Greek: στρατιώται), i.e. ''soldiers''〔Trecanni (ed.), ''Grande Enciclopedia Italiana'', "Stradioti": "dal basso greco στρατιώται"; : "dal greco ''stratiòta''".〕 Alternatively, it derives from the Italian word ''strada'' ('street'), meaning 'wayfarer'.〔 (Sam Houston State University).〕 The Albanian stradioti of Venice were also called ''capelletti'' (sing.
