It is currently part of the municipality of Risør in the Sørlandet region. The municipality had an area of upon its dissolution. The highway Riksvei 418 passes through Søndeled. The village of Søndeled is located at the end of the Nordfjorden, a part of the Søndeledfjorden. ==Name== The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old name of the local fjord (Old Norse: ''Sundaleiðr''). The first element comes from the word ''sundene'' which means "straits" and the last element is ''led'' (Old Norse: ''leið'') which means "path" or "way".
