As of April 1, 2005, the city has an estimated population of 33,309 and a population density of 130 persons per km². The total area is 265.18 km². The modern city of Tainai was established on September 1, 2005, from the merger of the town of Nakajō, and the village of Kurokawa (both from Kitakanbara District).
