TaxAct is an American tax preparation software package. The predecessor to TaxAct was known as Personal Tax Edge by Parsons Technology. In 1994, Intuit purchased Parsons Technology and dissolved Personal Tax Edge. TaxAct, then known as 2nd Story Software, was founded in 1998 by employees (Lance Dunn, Alan Sperfslage, Jerry McConnell, and Cammie Greif) who previously worked on Personal Tax Edge.〔(TaxAct About Us )〕 ==Overview== TaxAct's affordable DIY tax preparation solutions are available in desktop and mobile-responsive online versions.〔(TaxAct Consumer Products )〕 In late 2015, TaxAct announced it would kick off the upcoming tax season by offering TaxAct Free Edition, allowing customers to prepare and file simple federal (1040EZ/A) and state returns for free. The company recently changed its products to offer a more personalized filing experience tailored to customers’ unique tax situations. TaxAct Plus and Premium Editions are priced well below similar DIY online products and are organized around the forms and schedules filers need. TaxAct also offers a suite of federal and state solutions for small businesses and professional preparers.〔(TaxACT Professional )〕 In tax year 2015, TaxAct introduced professional and DIY solutions to easily prepare and e-file Form 990 informational returns for tax-exempt organizations, non-profit organizations, nonexempt charitable trusts and section 527 political organizations. TaxAct is a member of the Free File Alliance, a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for eligible individual taxpayers developed through a partnership between the IRS and a group of private sector tax software companies.〔(Members of Free File Alliance (2011) )〕 In October 2010, H&R Block said it would pay $287.5 million in cash to acquire the parent firm of TaxAct.
