Thoth
:''For other meanings of "Thoth", or of "Djehuti" and similar, see Thoth (disambiguation).''
Thoth ( or ; from Greek ', from Egyptian ''(unicode:ḏḥwty),'' perhaps pronounced
*// or
*//, depending on the phonological interpretation of Egyptian's emphatic consonants) was one of the deities of the Egyptian pantheon. In art, he was often depicted as a man with the head of an ibis or a baboon, animals sacred to him. His feminine counterpart was Seshat, and his wife was Ma'at.〔Thutmose III: A New Biography By Eric H Cline, David O'Connor University of Michigan Press (January 5, 2006)p. 127〕
Thoth's chief temple was located in the city of Khmun,〔Not to be confused with the deity Khnum.〕〔''National Geographic Society: Egypt's Nile Valley Supplement Map''. (Produced by the Cartographic Division)〕 later called Hermopolis Magna during the Greco-Roman era〔''National Geographic Society: Egypt's Nile Valley Supplement Map'': ''Western Desert portion''. (Produced by the Cartographic Division)〕 (in reference to him through the Greeks' interpretation that he was the same as their god Hermes) and ''Shmounein'' in the Coptic rendering, and was partially destroyed in 1826.〔Miroslav Verner, Temple of the World: Sanctuaries, Cults, and Mysteries of Ancient Egypt (2013) 149〕 In that city, he led the Ogdoad pantheon of eight principal deities. He also had numerous shrines within the cities of Abydos, Hesert, Urit, Per-Ab, Rekhui, Ta-ur, Sep, Hat, Pselket, Talmsis, Antcha-Mutet, Bah, Amen-heri-ab, and Ta-kens.〔(Budge ''The Gods of the Egyptians'' Thoth was said to be born from the skull of set also said to be born from the heart of Ra.p. 401)〕
Thoth played many vital and prominent roles in Egyptian mythology, such as maintaining the universe, and being one of the two deities (the other being Ma'at) who stood on either side of Ra's boat.〔(Budge ''The Gods of the Egyptians'' Vol. 1 p. 400)〕 In the later history of ancient Egypt, Thoth became heavily associated with the arbitration of godly disputes,〔(Budge ''The Gods of the Egyptians'' Vol. 1 p. 405)〕 the arts of magic, the system of writing, the development of science,〔(Budge ''The Gods of the Egyptians'' Vol. 1 p. 414)〕 and the judgment of the dead.〔(Budge ''The Gods of the Egyptians'' p. 403)〕
