TransApps (Transformative Applications) is a United States Department of Defense’s “Mobile Apps for the Military” program funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). TransApps provides Soldiers with a number of secure mobile applications that function within a broad range of austere environments. The program began in 2010, and within 18 months supported 3,000 users in Afghanistan. The TransApps program managed rapid development within a tactical environment and tackled many diverse problem sets in the realms of security, combat tested mobile applications, third party app testing and integration, and disconnected mobile imagery. The program developed and employed testing at the application level, as well as a marketplace for mobile apps.〔http://www.transapps.net/〕 Unlike many other DoD development projects, the program sought to pursue a start-up business mentality, including a collaborative research environment across the team with multiple contractors and Government personnel colocated in an incubator-like environment. Currently, there are more than 50 applications available for use within a secure operational environment, such as a range of geospatial, cultural, and analytic capabilities.〔http://m.fedweek.com/item-view.php?tbl=4&ID=3887〕 == Timeline == The TransApps Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) was released in March 2010.〔https://www.fbo.gov/?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=366136beefbaf1b041863f3d61cfc8fb&tab=core&_cview=0〕 The BAA noted a range of potential use cases, including tactical battlefield applications, as well as humanitarian missions and disaster recovery. The TransApps program was devised and initially managed by Dr. Mari Maeda who also developed a previous successful DARPA project, the Tactical Ground Reporting System (TIGR). TIGR was among one of the first defense-related efforts to place modern web and server technologies in the hands of warfighters. TIGR emphasized the collection, sharing, and persisting of information in real-time, mainly through mapping capabilities. TIGR began in 2007 and was led by Dr. Mari Maeda as part of the DARPA Information Processing Techniques Office. In 2009, General Peter Chiarelli, at the time the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, noted, "Today, TIGR is arming Soldiers from 17 combat brigades in Iraq and Afghanistan with exactly what they need - the best information and knowledge available to them on the ground in real time." The project received strong support from the military, and was slotted for transition to the Army in 2012.〔http://www.army.mil/article/28700/tigr-allows-soldiers-to-be-there-before-they-arrive/〕 However, with the onset and quick omnipresence of smart phones, by 2010 there was a need to expand the TIGR platform and accelerate its capabilities in sync with the new smart phone technologies.〔For an overview of trends in handheld devices for the military http://www.gps.gov/governance/advisory/meetings/2013-05/jewell.pdf〕 DARPA Director, Arati Prabhakar, noted that at the time, soldiers still were relying on paper maps for situational awareness. Soldiers struggled with piecing together the vast range of data to create a common operating picture within a tactical environment.〔http://information-awareness-office.org/IAO___DARPA_NEWS_PAGE12_.html〕 Many of the existing requirements of the TIGR application provided the foundation for the follow-on baseline requirements for TransApps. These included a renewed emphasis on user-centric development, as well as a focus on security, functionality under limited connectivity, and a broader suite of applications.〔http://www.aerotechnews.com/news/2013/11/18/darpa-focuses-on-technology-for-national-security/〕 TransApps was initially awarded in September 2010 to the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), with the focus on building a secure, mobile app store.〔http://www.networkworld.com/community/blog/military-mobile-apps-store-gets-64m-open〕 This was followed a few years later with a contract awarded to Metronome to build out the app store.〔http://www.militaryaerospace.com/articles/2013/07/metronome-cyber-app.html〕 The app store, simply referred to as the “Marketplace” emphasizes a flexible and extensible environment to meet a wide range of mission needs, within a collaborative development environment to optimize DARPA’s investment.〔http://www.adlnet.gov/resources/apps-on-a-global-object-repository-architecture-agora-and-the-transformative-apps-project?type=presentation〕 Moreover, it serves as a key component in innovating the acquisition process, expediting the time from application development to mission use. Over time, Metronome has expanded the marketplace to focus on mobile and cyber security as well.〔http://information-awareness-office.org/IAO___DARPA_NEWS_PAGE6.html〕 While there has been much success, TransApps initially relied upon the Dell Streak, which was discontinued in 2011. Since then, the TransApps platform has adjusted to function on a range of hardware, including Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Note, and Samsung S4. In addition to security, additional emphasis has also been placed on usability and visualization via the iWarrior SBIR that falls under TransApps.〔http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10000872396390444772804577621950655761214〕 In 2012, TransApps was identified as one of the top 25 C4ISR breakthroughs of the year.〔http://www.defensenews.com/article/20121009/C4ISR02/310090013/C4ISR-Journal-Big-25-Year-8217-s-Biggest-Breakthroughs〕 In April 2013, DARPA awarded a contract to GXM Consulting to continue to expand the functionality and robustness of the smartphones.〔http://www.militaryaerospace.com/articles/2013/04/DARPA-Transformative-Apps.html〕 TransApps not only has focused on security abroad, but has also employed the capabilities domestically. TransApps supported first response and law enforcement personnel during the 2013 Presidential Inauguration.〔http://www.deepdyve.com/lp/spie/performance-assessments-of-android-powered-military-applications-lCb0dj45Pa〕 That same year, TransApps also was present at the Boston Marathon, providing similar support for first responders, and did so again at the 2014 Boston Marathon. During FY2014, TransApps is working with the Army Nett Warrior Program to fully transition the project to the Army as a program of record.〔http://www.darpa.mil/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=2147487679〕 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「TransApps」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
