Unbabel

Unbabel is an artificial intelligence powered human translation platform. Headquartered in San Francisco, California with offices in Lisbon, Portugal, the company currently works with over 25,000 crowdsourced translators on desktop and mobile across 45 language pairs.〔Owen Andrew, (“The Importance of Mobile Crowdsourcing in 2015” ), “Huffington Post”, January 30, 2015〕〔Joao Ramos and Margarida Fiuza, (“10 empresas que estão a dar cartas” ), "10 Up and Coming Businesses", “Expresso”, May 12, 2015〕
In addition to a crowdsourced model, the company's post-editing process and relatively low pricing are differentiators between itself and other translation service providers.〔Cristina Ferreira, (“Unbabel: Traduzir pode ser um hobby para ganhar dinheiro” ), "Unbabel: Translation can be a hobby to make money", “SAPO”, July 08, 2014〕〔Julien Brault, (“Des brèches technos dans la barrière des langues” ), "Technology is breaking language barriers", “Les Affaires”, January 28, 2015〕 The name Unbabel is derived from the biblical story of Babel.
==History==
Unbabel was founded in August 2013 by Vasco Pedro, Joao Graça, Sofia Pessanha, Bruno Silva, and Hugo Silva and was incubated by Y Combinator in late 2014. The company officially launched in March 2014.〔Rip Empson, (“Unbabel Launches A Human-Edited Machine Translation Service To Help Businesses Go Global, Localize Customer Support” ), “TechCrunch”, March 23, 2014.〕
In July 2014, Unbabel raised a $1.5 million Seed round to support the growth and development of its translation platform, receiving investment from prominent venture capital firms and business angels including Google Ventures, Matrix Partners, Faber Ventures, IDG Ventures, Digital Garage, Shilling Capital Partners, WeFunder, FundersClub, Elad Gil and Raymond Tonsing.〔Julian Chokkattu, (“Unbabel Raises $1.5M to Expand Translation Service, Grow Customer Base” ), “TechCrunch”, July 18, 2014〕〔Kia Kokalitcheva, (“Unbabel scores $1.5M to add a human touch to machine-powered translation” ), “VentureBeat”, July 18, 2014〕 In early 2015, Unbabel was recognized as one of Y Combinator’s fastest growing Seed stage companies.〔Mattermark, (“Mattermark Startup Index: Top 10 Y Combinator Companies by Stage” ), “Mattermark”, February 9, 2015〕 The company is privately held.
