As of 2010, the city has an estimated population of 81,532 and a population density of 1,380 persons per km². The total area is 58.88 km². The city was founded on June 1, 1986, and is home to one of the world's tallest statues, the Ushiku Daibutsu. Additional attractions include Chateau Kamiya, a wine chateau started in 1901, and Lake Ushiku, a scenic lake that is said to be the birthplace of the mythical Kappa (folklore) beast. It is also the location of the East Japan Immigration Control Center.
