Uys is the surname of a South African family, originally from Leiden in the Netherlands. The first Uys ancestor arriving at Cape Town in about 1700 was Cornelis Janse, accompanied by his wife Dirkje Matthysen and his widowed mother. In the Twentieth Century several members were well known for their contributions to the arts and for their social activism.
