Vallavilai is located north-west to Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari) and south-east to Trivandrum (capital of Kerala). This place has historical importance since the Portuguese invasion in India. St. Francis Xavier was visiting the coast from Punnalkayal to Kanyakumari in November – December 1544. After had a rich mission experience at the Fishery Coast, St. Francis Xavier entered into the Travancore Kingdom. When St. Xavier planned for a general conversion, he might have come to the Travancore Coast that extended from Kanyakumari to Quilon. Though there was a large population of infidels living outside the coast Francis Xavier tried first to convert the people of the coast. On December 1544, 10000 Mukkuva fishermen living in thirteen villages along the coast and Vallavilai is one among them. Vallavilai plays a vital role in Kollemcode panchayat's development. The population mainly is made up of Christians, Hindus and Muslims. But most of the villagers belong to Mukkuvar community, and are Roman Catholics, and involved in fishing. They are specialized in shark catching using traditional methods. They use mechanized boats and long lining for shark hunting and stay at sea up to 30 consecutive days. However, majority of the people use traditional methods and appliances for fishing like Kattumaram, thattumadi (boat seine, is of Spanish origin) and karamadi (seashore seine, is of Portuguese origin). Kochi is the main hub for the people those who are in the Fishing field. Other places where people go for fishing are Kollam, Neendakara, Munambam, Goa, Malwan, Ratnagiri, Gujarat, Mumbai, Pondicherry and Rameswaram. St. Antony's Gramodharan Sangam which was established in the next year of India's Independence - 1948. That has been serving the people as a place where all people from the neighbouring villages have access to the information. Action Council for Bridge Reconstruction is another body which was formed by the people in Vallavilai. This enabled them to make the dream of reconstructing a Bridge that is build across Anantha Victoria Marthandavarma Canal. People of Vallavilai are spread across all continents of the world. They always stand unique in unity and integrity. The development in IT and ITES sector all over the world has made an impact on lives of people of Vallavilai as well. It was felt to have a network to connect all people those who are spread globally so that everyone will stay connected. Students and jobseekers will have access to the employed section. Thus, in 2005, people in Vallavilai has formed a nicely conceptualized website Vallavilai.com to keep the people connected and to increase number of employees in Vallavilai and around. With a similar intention of providing support to the Student community to complete their studies meritoriously, people of Vallavilai living and working in different countries joined together to form an association named Vallavilai Welfare Association (VWA) in the year 2010. This association primarily provides moral and financial support to the needy poor students to complete their studies and excel in education. Also On 01-01-2015 ,some of the youngsters from Islamic community had gathered and discussed to organized a trust to uplift the poor people from poverty,to serve the patients who were affected by cancer and to provide food,clothes and shelter for the needy people of India. Males constitute 51% of the population and Females 49%. Vallavilai has an average literacy rate of 86%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is78% and female 75%. In vallavilai 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. majarity of the population belong to Roman Catholic Mukkuvar community.
