Vaniyamkulam is an important trading hub of southern Malabar in Kerala state, India, particularly of livestock arriving from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. The name derived from Vanian, connected with Trading community. It is now part of the Palakkad District. During Chera Perumals, this place was under Chera Kingdom, under Nedunganad. This is close to Kothakursi, a place where Chera rulers first settled in Malabar area. Kotha is the pet name of Chera Rulers. Although Malayalam is the spoken language, it has a sizable population of Tamil speaking people. The weekly market on Thursdays attracts traders and shoppers from far and wide. Even elephants were traded at this market in the olden days. The town has a population of nearly one hundred thousand people. It is connected by road with other important towns in the region, namely Ottapalam and Shoranur. The nearest railway station is at Mannanur, situated on the banks of the Bharathappuzha River, the longest and most important river in Kerala.
