Velveteria

Velveteria, officially called Velveteria: The Museum of Velvet Paintings, was a museum located in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to velvet paintings, opened in 2005. The establishment, which housed 400 paintings from Caren Anderson and Carl Baldwin's personal collection of over 2,000 pieces, was reportedly the only one of its kind in the world during its four years of operation. Velveteria closed in January 2010 due to financial difficulties and the couple's relocation to Southern California. Anderson and Baldwin expressed their hope to re-open Velveteria in California.
In December 2013, the Velveteria re-opened as the Velveteria Epicenter of Art Fighting Cultural Deprivation, located in Los Angeles.
==History==

The museum was established by Caren Anderson and Carl Baldwin, California natives residing in Portland.〔 It opened in 2005 at 518 NE 28th Avenue. Operating hours were noon to 5pm Friday through Sunday; admission was $3.〔
During the month of May 2008 a collection of works were showcased at Powell's Books. The museum relocated to a larger space, located at 2448 East Burnside Street, in 2008.〔 The hours of operation were expanded to include Thursday and admission increased to $5. However, rental costs were more than three times higher, proving to be a financial challenge.〔 After four years of operation, Velveteria closed in January 2010, when Anderson and Baldwin decided to relocate to Southern California.〔 According to Anderson and Baldwin, they "never made any real money" from Velveteria, a name they trademarked. The couple wrote a book about the museum, titled ''Black Velvet Masterpieces: Highlights from the Collection of the Velveteria Museum''.〔 The couple hoped to re-open Velveteria in Southern California.〔
Velveteria re-opened as the Velveteria Epicenter of Art Fighting Cultural Deprivation in Los Angeles in December 2013.〔http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/velvet-underdogs-in-praise-of-the-paintings-the-art-world-loves-to-hate/〕
