WWHI (91.3 FM) is a non-commercial radio station operated by students of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. The station is branded as WCRD "The Pulse of Ball State." Former brandings included "The Broken Wing of College Radio", a reference to Cardinal Radio Dave, after alumnus and founder David Letterman, as well as "College Radio on Demand" from 2006 to 2012〔http://www.myspace.com/913wcrdfm〕 The station's format is primarily rock and top 40, however listener requests, DJ's choice, as well as College Radio Format are also played. This new format was implemented in 2006 after switching away from only using College Radio Format and DJ's choice. The station is operated out of the David Letterman Communication and Media Building on the Ball State University campus. The station is also the only radio station in the MAC (Mid-American Conference) that broadcasts all 18 collegiate sports that Ball State has to offer. Another unique characteristic of WCRD is that any Ball State student regardless of seniority, major, or prior experience is welcome to be a DJ on WCRD.〔WCRD News Staff〕 WCRD Radio has a half-hour live news show every weekday, WCRD News Live @ 5, from 5 to 5:30 p.m.〔http://wcrd.iweb.bsu.edu/news/schedule.asp〕 WCRD also broadcasts its morning show, "The Morning Chirp," from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. WCRD obtained the license for educational station WWHI in 2005 from Muncie Southside High School, where the tower was located, allowing the station to broadcast beyond their carrier circuit only available on campus. In Fall 2008 a new broadcasting antenna was installed, allowing a greater broadcasting range. The new antenna is located on top of the West Quad Building Smokestack at Ball State University.〔http://wcrd.iweb.bsu.edu/newantenna.asp〕 A live stream of the station is also available on WCRD's website as well as WCRH-TV, Channel 57 on Ball State's campus. A live web camera in the WCRD studio was added Fall 2008. This allows online listeners to view the DJ and guests in the studio. The camera was turned off following website updates in 2012. In 2012 WCRD introduced its mascot, the Wild Crazy Radio Dude. The Radio Dude can be found at WCRD events as well as out and about campus multiple days of the week.〔http://wcrd.net/about/wild-crazy-radio-dude/〕 ==Awards== Since 2003, WCRD has won several awards, including more than 20 Communicator Awards from the International Academy of the Visual Arts, awards from the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters' College Competition and an ADDY Award from the American Advertising Federation.〔http://wcrd.iweb.bsu.edu/about/awards.asp〕 WCRD has also won multiple awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, Indiana chapter.
