Wiremap

WIREMAP was created as one of digital new media art by Albert Hwang in 2008. Hwang did not have enough experience about programming to create the WIREMAP. Then, he used open source programming language, Processing, which is created to teach basis of computer programming within a visual context. He said this open source programming environment is perfectly fitted to the WIREMAP. Since this open source helped his project much, he provides his source to download on his WIREMAP website 〔http://wiremap.phedhex.com/index.html〕 because he encourages people who make their own and send more idea for improvement to him.
One of interesting things is that WIREMAP is very unconventional as three-dimension artwork. Although each wire is evenly and vertically arrayed and hanged, since they are arrayed randomly in dimension of depth, it creates three-dimension interface design by hitting manipulating light from projector to wires. Changing of a floating and glowing three-dimension object by light from projector, it will move around and create different color or size images.
As he encourages people to send ideas for improvement to him, he thinks he is not satisfied with it and likes to improve the WIREMAP. In the Website of New York University, he mentioned the five ideas so far that he has for improvement. For example, he wants to add interactivity with P5 Glove (provide a user total intuitive interaction) to allow people to move WIREMAP to see, use other software such as Maya and AutoCAD to see more three-dimension glowing mass of the design, add more wires at six feet tall to make better resolution, or make it smaller to be portable.
Depending on projecting films, it makes possible to show movement in three-dimension. For example, it can show the looking that car is moving in three-dimension. He is attempting to make different numbers or length of wire to use such as WIREMAP 256, WIREMAP 85, and WIREMAP v1.0. Some people also have been working on other WIREMAP, Litescape 3D, by Elliot Woods. It is matched with music and light effect. It is possible to watch their works in Hwang’s WIREMAP website or http://www.phedhex.com/.
