Yahiko was one of the chief Shinto shrines (''ichinomiya'') of the old Echigo Province. It serves today as one of the ''ichinomiya'' of Niigata Prefecture.

The present shrine was rebuilt in 1916. The earlier shrine buildings were destroyed by a 1912 fire which started in the village.〔
