Yaéré
The Yaéré, a name designated from the local language, is a vast annually flooded flat savanna grassland plain, part of the extensive floodplains around the shallow and variable Lake Chad in Central Africa.〔The annual flooding is described by A. Bouchardeau, ''Monographie hydrologique du Logone'', (Paris:Orstom) 1968; V. Bénech ''et al.'', ''Hydrologie et physico-chimie des eaux d'inondation de la plain d'inondation du Nord-Cameroun (in series: ''Cahiers Orstom: série hydrologique'') 1982 and E. Naah, ''Restauration hydro-technique de la plaine du Yaéré'', (Projet Waza Logone, Yaoundé) 1993.〕
When not inundated by floods the Yaéré is an ecoregion of the Tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands Biome, and when flooded it is an African freshwater ecoregion in the Flooded grasslands and savannas Biome.
==Geography==
The Yaéré covers areas of northeasternmost Nigeria, of Niger, of southern Chad and of the Far North Region of Cameroon. The Yaéré extends from the low hills at the base of the Mandara Mountains in the southwest to Lake Chad in the north. In the east it merges with the permanent wetlands bordering the Logone.〔Daniel Sighomnou, Luc Sigha Nkamdjou, and Gaston Liénou, "La plain du Yaéré dans le Nord-Cameroun: un expérience des restauration des innondations"〕 At the beginning of the wet season the clays that compose the soil expand and form an imprmeable pan over which the water collects.〔Sighomnou ''et al.''〕
It is connected to the more permanent wetlands along the Logone River, which flows into the endorheic Lake Chad and seasonally overflows into the surrounding Yaéré savanna. Torrential seasonal rains also drain from the Mandara Mountains, bringing a rich sediment to the floodplain. The ecological richness of the Yaéré derives from its particular conditions of wet-season flooding and dry season drought.〔("La France au Cameroun: Mission hydrologique dans leYaéré" )〕
