It was consolidated with Lappeenranta on January 1, 2010. It is located in the province of Southern Finland and was part of the South Karelia region. The municipality had a population of 1,408 (31 December 2009)〔 and covers an area of of which is water.〔 The population density is . The municipality was unilingually Finnish. There is a strong concentration of the gemstone Spectrolite in the region of Ylämaa.
