The Yuan River flows through it; at the county seat, the You River flows into the Yuan. It is the largest county-level division of the province and the northernmost in Huaihua City, bordering the prefecture-level divisions of Zhangjiajie to the north, Changde to the northeast, Yiyang to the southeast, and Xiangxi to the west. ==Ethnic groups== According to the ''Yuanling County Almanac'' (1993:104), there are 36,715 ethnic Miao and 23,879 ethnic Tujia.
