== History ==

According to Georgian sources the prefix Zaal, also a Georgian male name, derives from Persia after the Persian mythological figure Zal, a legendary albino warrior known for his distinctive white hair. He is sometimes referred to as a sun god. Zal appeared in the 11th century Persian epic poem ''Shahnameh'' by Ferdowsi.
The surnames Zaalishvili, Abulierdishvili, Makhviladze, Bezhanisshvili, Gamqhrelidze, and Niniashvili were declared in Prince Javakhishvili's list of aznauris in the 1783 Treaty of Georgievsk. The treaty was signed by Catherine the Great of Russia and King Irakli II of Kartli-Kakheti (Eastern Georgia). It established Georgia as a Russian protectorate. The treaty guaranteed Georgia’s territorial integrity, continuation of its reigning Bagrationi dynasty, and equality between Bagrationi and Romanov dynasties. Names of Georgian nobility were listed and were granted the same privileges as members of the Russian nobility. Catherine and her heirs promised to defend Georgia against enemies.
In 1801, Tsar Paul I signed a decree to annex Kartli-Kakhetia (Eastern Georgia) to Russia.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Treaty of Georgievsk )〕 The two orders of Georgian nobility were Tavadi, the head of a feudal clan (princes) and Aznauri, the lower order of the feudal nobility or gentry.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Georgian Genealogy )
Starting in the nineteenth century, some Georgians, especially those who served in the Tsar's army or lived in Russia, Russified their surnames. The suffixes changed from, for example, “shvili” to “ov(a).” In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Georgians and Russians who emigrated to Western Europe preferred French transliteration thus changing the Georgian or Russified suffixes "ov(a)" to "off." This practice became less common shortly after the Russian Revolution.
