Euzaphlegidae
Euzaphlegidae is a family of extinct, snake mackerel-like, or escolar-like fish whose fossils are found from Paleocene to Late Miocene strata of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains, India, Iran, Turkmenistan, Italy,〔Bannikov, ALEXANDRE F. "A new genus and species of putative euzaphlegid fish from the Eocene of Bolca in norther Italy (Periformes, Trichiuroidea)." Studi e Ricerche sui giacimenti Terziari di Bolca, XII Miscellanea Paleontologica 9 (2008): 99-107. ()〕 and Southern California.〔David, Lore Rose. January 10, 1943. Miocene Fishes of Southern California The Society p 104-115〕〔Danilʹchenko, P. G. 1967 Bony fishes of the Maikop deposits of the Caucasus〕 ==Description and taxonomy== In life, the Euzaphlegidae would have born a superficial resemblance to mackerels or wahoo, leading some researchers to place them within Scombridae or Cybiidae, respectively.〔 However, x-ray analysis of the bone structure strongly suggests a relationship with the snake-mackerels, with some experts placing them within Gempylidae.〔Mikko's Phylogeny Archive Gempylidae ()〕
