''Bromelia'' is the type genus of the botanical family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Bromelioideae. ''Bromelia'' species are widespread across much of Latin America and the West Indies,〔(Kew World Checklist of Selected Plant Families )〕 and are characterized by flowers with a deeply cleft calyx.
