The escudo is a unit of currency. Historically it was used in Portugal, Spain and in their colonies in South America, Asia, and Africa.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=World escudo coins on Colnect coin catalog )〕 It is still used in Cape Verde to this day. ''Escudo'' is Portuguese and Spanish for "shield". The Portuguese escudo (PTE) was the currency of Portugal prior to the introduction of the euro on 1 January 1999 and its removal from circulation on 28 February 2002.
