multicab
A multicab is a small light truck, mini ambulance, mini troop transport, police car, taxicab, family utility vehicle, and all-around workhorse vehicle used in the Philippines to reach local areas that are not served by jeepneys, which typically have fixed routes. A multicab, however, does not necessarily take passengers exactly where they want, as a tricycle might. Multicabs have steadily replaced jitneys and tricycles as the main mode of transport in urban and rural areas of the Philippines, and their increasing presence on the roads has made them more difficult for motorcycles and other two-wheeled traffic to navigate. A multicab is lightweight, narrow and small and can navigate through narrow streets. It has a very light body that is vulnerable to collapse in the event of collision with larger vehicles. Passengers are in general scantily protected. The passenger space also tends to be cramped relative to a van. Minicabs typically have three-cylinder engines. A multicab is about as comfortable as a jeepney, and usually has a cleaner and less noisy engine, but tend to be more expensive (about 1.5 to 3 times the jeepney fare). A group travelling by multicab may hire a multicab for a day, e.g. for family use, and pay the daily fee, while also buying food and drink for the driver. A multicab is typically assembled in a factory in the Philippines with surplus parts from Japan and South Korea, in contrast to jeepneys, which are usually hand-made. Popular makes are the Suzuki XRM 125, Suzuki LMM 376, Suzuki Every 660, or more rugged cousin, the Suzuki Scrum.
