Organothiophosphates are organic compounds that include a phosphorus-sulfur double bond (P=S). Many of these compounds are toxic, and some are used as pesticides. These variants with P=S double bonds, of organophosphates with P=O double bonds, were developed as insecticides because of their reduced mammalian toxicity, an important safety factor; the phosphorothioate P=S bond is converted to the toxic P=O bond in the target insect. Similar oxidative conversion in mammals is slower, conferring lower toxicity in mammals.
