It includes five neighbourhoods: ''Árbær'' proper, ''Ártúnsholt'', ''Norðlingaholt'', ''Selás'' and the non-residential ''Hálsar''. The area has approximately 13,000 inhabitants. Located in eastern part of the city, the Árbær neighborhood is well known for its natural surroundings and pristine nature. The Valley of Elliðaár and the river flowing through are at the heart of Árbær. ==History== The core residential part was built in the 1960s to 1970s in a loose Corbusier style, similar to nearby Breiðholt. Development of the outer parts started in the 1980s and continued well into the 90s.
