A hill in what is now Ukyo-ku, Kyoto; the road over it led to Tanba Province."〕 The mount is 480m high. It was known in popular mythology as the residence of Shuten-dōji, a demon. It was developed for nickel mines, where Allied POWs were used,〔Naoko Shibusawa ''America's Geisha Ally: Reimagining the Japanese Enemy'' 2006 Page 142 "Oeyama Nickel Industry Company, a mining and metal processing plant located a hundred kilometers from Kyoto near the Sea of Japan. During the war this company used Allied prisoners of war as laborers at the company's surface mines."〕 and then reversed as the site of an Allied POW camp after the end of World War II.
